Australia’s Strongest Rat Poisons Are Leaving Retail Shelves – Here’s What It Means for You

Australia’s toughest rat and mouse poisons are officially being pulled from supermarket and hardware shelves in larger quantities – and it’s one of the biggest changes to pest management laws in years.

Major retailers including Coles, Woolworths, Bunnings, IGA and Mitre 10 are removing bigger / bulks packs of products containing Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) following action by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).

Why Are These Products Being Restricted?

SGARs are highly potent rodenticides designed to kill rodents after a single feed. Unfortunately, they don’t just affect rats and mice.

Native wildlife including owls, kookaburras, tawny frogmouths, quolls, reptiles and even pets have been found suffering secondary poisoning after consuming poisoned rodents. Scientists have identified rodenticide contamination in dozens of Australian wildlife species.

Because of these environmental risks, the APVMA announced on 10 March 2026 that SGAR products should become “Restricted Chemical Products”, meaning access will be limited to trained and licensed operators only.

Which Rodenticides Are Affected?

The restrictions apply to products containing these active ingredients:

• Brodifacoum
• Bromadiolone
• Difenacoum
• Difethialone
• Flocoumafen

What Popular Brands Does This Include?

Many well-known consumer rodent bait brands contain these ingredients, including selected products from:

• Ratsak
• Tomcat
• Talon
• Strategem
• Big Cheese
• Rodilon
• Various private-label supermarket and hardware brands

Not every rodent product is disappearing – only those containing restricted SGAR active ingredients and packets weighing 300+ grams.

Important Dates Residents Should Know

• 10 March 2026 – APVMA officially certified SGARs should become Restricted Chemical Products.
• 24 March 2026 – Registration of SGAR products suspended nationally for 12 months while tighter controls are implemented.
• By 30 June 2026 – Bunnings confirmed affected products will be removed from shelves.
• Other retailers including Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Mitre 10 are progressively removing stock during the national transition period.

Once the restrictions are fully implemented, stronger SGAR rodenticides will generally only be available in small packs or through licensed and accredited pest management professionals. • Complete accredited training units in pest management and chemical handling
• Follow APVMA label directions and state legislation
• Use tamper-resistant bait stations where required
• Maintain treatment records and risk assessments
• Minimise risks to wildlife, pets and non-target animals
• Comply with Workplace Health & Safety obligations and environmental protection requirements

Under the new interim APVMA rules, SGAR baiting is also subject to tighter controls including restricted outdoor use, secure bait placement and mandatory reassessment periods.
