Pest Control Stretton

Termite and Pest Cover for Stretton’s Big-Block Homes and Landscaped Grounds

National Pest Solutions treats general pests and manages termites across Stretton, where nearly every home is a detached house on a generous block with deep gardens, sheds, pools and fencelines to work around. That extra ground is exactly where pest and termite pressure builds before anyone sees it inside.

YOUR LOCAL PEST CONTROL STRETTON TEAM

More land to look after means more places pests can start

Stretton sits about 17 kilometres south of the Brisbane CBD in the Calamvale Ward of Brisbane City Council, bordered by Calamvale, Sunnybank Hills, Kuraby, Runcorn, Drewvale and Karawatha. Gowan Road and Illaweena Street carry most of the local traffic, and the suburb was largely built out from the 1980s and 1990s onward on allotments that are big by Brisbane standards. At the 2021 Census, 98.6 per cent of occupied private dwellings here were separate houses, with only about 1.5 per cent semi-detached and no apartments recorded at all.

This page covers our general pest work and our termite inspections and management for Stretton properties. National Pest Solutions is a South East Queensland business, so the same technicians also work across Brisbane’s southern suburbs, the wider Brisbane region, Moreton Bay, Redlands, Logan and the Sunshine Coast.

The reason Stretton needs its own approach is the size and layout of the properties. A treatment or an inspection here is not one lap of a small townhouse footprint. It is a long perimeter with garden beds built up against the slab, retaining walls, pool surrounds, sheds and shade structures, established trees and mulched beds, plus a bushland or wetland edge nearby in the south of the suburb. Every one of those features is a place where moisture sits, where timber contacts soil, or where the visible edge of the slab has been covered over. That is where we spend our time.

MYTH BUSTER

Does a big block on the edge of Karawatha Forest mean you will get termites?

Not automatically. Living near bushland does not decide whether your home has a termite or pest problem. What matters is the condition of your own property. The things that genuinely raise the risk are practical and fixable:

  • Garden beds, turf or mulch built up over the edge of a slab, so the slab edge cannot be inspected
  • Timber sleepers, retaining walls, pergola posts or fence posts in direct contact with soil
  • Stored timber, firewood, pool timber offcuts or old fencing stacked against the house or in a shed
  • Leaking or poorly aimed irrigation, air conditioning condensate and downpipes discharging next to the footings
  • Dense shrubs planted hard against walls, blocking airflow and hiding activity
  • Tree stumps and buried roots left in place after landscaping or a knock-down rebuild
  • Roof void and subfloor areas that no one has looked into for years

Two homes in the same Stretton street can sit in completely different risk positions. We assess the individual property rather than the postcode.

WHAT WE TREAT: PEST CONTROL STRETTON

General pest control and termite management

Two service lines cover nearly every Stretton job: a general pest treatment for the household pests that come in from gardens and grounds, and termite work that runs from inspection through to treatment and ongoing management. The full detail of each service lives on the site-level service pages linked below.

General pest control in Stretton

Most Stretton homes are large detached houses with wide eaves, multiple external doors and long garden edges, which gives ants, cockroaches and spiders plenty of ways in. We treat the whole external envelope rather than just the front and back doors, including shed and garage walls, pool pumps and equipment bays, meter boxes, weep holes and the fenceline. Inside, we focus on kitchen and laundry voids, roof voids and any room that opens onto a covered outdoor area.

Local fact: At the 2021 Census, Stretton recorded 98.6 per cent separate houses and no apartments, so almost every job here is a whole-of-house and whole-of-yard treatment.

Termite inspections and management in Stretton

Stretton’s housing is dominated by slab on ground construction from the 1980s onward, often with rendered walls, landscaped surrounds and later additions such as decks, pool houses and outdoor rooms. On those homes the slab edge is the single most useful thing to see and the thing most often buried under garden beds or paving. We check the slab perimeter, plus subfloors where they exist, roof voids, wet areas, patio and deck junctions, sheds and any timber in ground contact.

Local fact: Stretton’s southern edge runs into Karawatha Forest and the Calamvale Creek wetlands, so bushland timber and moisture sit close to the newest landscaping in the suburb.

COMMON STRETTON PESTS WE TREAT

Pest Control Stretton | Inspections

Ants

Coastal brown and black house ants track along slab edges, driveway joints and paths, then find the kitchen. We treat the trails and the nesting areas outside, not just the ants you can see indoors.

Pest Control Stretton | Inspections

Cockroaches

German cockroaches ride in with cartons and groceries and settle in warm kitchen voids, while larger species come in from drains, garden beds and bin areas after dark. Treatment targets harbourage, not open surfaces.

Pest Control Stretton | Inspections

Rats & Mice

Rats and mice move in from drainage lines, dense vegetation and commercial bin areas, then use roof spaces and wall cavities. Older brick homes that have settled often have a gap at the eaves or roller door big enough to matter.

Pest Control Stretton | Inspections

Spiders

Webbing spiders take over eaves, patios and pergolas on low set brick homes, and ground dwellers favour retaining walls, rockeries and mulched beds. We treat exteriors and clear webbing so it is obvious what has been done.

Pest Control Stretton | Inspections

Silverfish

Treatment for silverfish activity in cupboards, storage spaces and other protected areas.

Fleas and other household pests

Treatment options for a wide variety of crawling, scurrying and flying pests.

Why big blocks and buried slab edges matter here

Built for large-lot properties, buried slab edges and a bushland southern boundary

Stretton was farmland and timber country before it was gazetted as a suburb in 1972, and the residential build-out came later than most of southern Brisbane, mainly from the 1980s and 1990s. The result is a suburb of large detached homes on large lots, with the north of the suburb hilly and the south flattening out into vegetation as it meets Karawatha Forest to the south-east and the Calamvale Creek wetlands to the south-west. Karawatha Forest Park is listed as a nationally important wetland, with lagoons and wet heathland inside it. For pest and termite work, that combination gives us three things to manage at once: a long built perimeter, thirty-odd years of landscaping and rebuilding that has often covered the slab edge, and a nearby bushland and wetland edge that keeps timber, moisture and nuisance insects in the picture.

What we do differently on a Stretton property:

Walk and record the full perimeter, including sheds, pool houses, retaining walls and pergolas, not just the main dwelling footprint
Identify where soil, mulch, turf or paving has covered the slab edge, and tell you plainly what could not be inspected and why
Moisture test around wet areas, pool surrounds, irrigation lines and air conditioning condensate discharge points
Check the roof void and any subfloor or split-level cavity, which the larger and later homes here often have
Assess whether a barrier, a Trelona(R) Advanced Termite Baiting System installation or a combination suits the construction and the landscaping, rather than defaulting to one method

Local fact: Stretton is roughly 4.5 to 5 square kilometres with only about 1,374 dwellings recorded at the 2021 Census, which is why the average job here covers more ground than a job in a denser suburb.

Honest caveat: How often a property needs inspecting or treating depends on its construction, its landscaping, its history and its surroundings. We assess that on site and tell you what we found. We do not apply a fixed schedule to every home.

THE PRACTICAL SIDE

Working around Stretton

Stretton is quiet, low density and almost entirely detached housing, which makes access straightforward in most streets but adds ground to cover on every visit. A few local details change how we plan the day.

Off-street parking is usually available in Stretton driveways, so we can work from the vehicle at the house rather than running hose and equipment from a distant kerb, as we often do in denser suburbs
Gowan Road and Illaweena Street are the main local routes, and Brisbane City Council has been delivering an Illaweena Street improvements project including a new car park and intersection changes near Gowan Road, so we allow for delays around those works
School traffic around Stretton State College is heavy at drop-off and pick-up, since both its Gowan Road primary campus and its Illaweena Street secondary campus are inside the suburb, and we book around those windows where we can
With about 1.5 per cent of Stretton dwellings semi-detached and no apartments recorded at the 2021 Census, body corporate approval is rarely part of the job here, unlike in Calamvale and Sunnybank Hills. Where a property is tenanted, we still confirm access arrangements with the owner or property manager first
Pets, pool areas, veggie gardens, chicken pens and children's play equipment are common on blocks this size, so we walk the yard with you first, note what needs covering or avoiding, and give clear re-entry advice for treated areas

Local fact: Stretton Community Park on Cleveland Place was named at the request of local residents in 1995, a reminder that these streets are established, well planted and long settled, not a new estate.

Termite Inspections Stretton

A newer brick home on a big block is not a termite-proof home.

Stretton’s homes are mostly younger than Brisbane’s post-war housing, which leads a lot of owners to assume termites are somebody else’s problem. In practice the risk here is created after handover: garden beds raised over the slab edge, timber retaining walls and sleepers, a pergola or deck added years later, a pool build that changed the drainage, or a knock-down rebuild that left stumps and buried timber in the ground.

Our residential pest control Stretton inspections currently incorporate traditional sounding of accessible timbers, thermal imaging, moisture testing and a full written report. We inspect the accessible interior, roof void, subfloor where one exists, the perimeter, the fenceline, sheds and other outbuildings, and trees and stumps in the yard. Where something cannot be accessed, the report says so rather than leaving you to assume it was clear.

Local fact: Stretton’s southern boundary meets Karawatha Forest and the Calamvale Creek wetland system, both of which hold standing water and native timber year round.

Stretton Termite Treatments

Live termite find note: If you find live termites, do not spray them and do not disturb the workings. Disturbance scatters them into new areas of the building and makes the colony harder to deal with. Treatment has to address the colony, not just the termites you can see. Cover the area back up, leave it alone and call us on 1300 356 691.

Active treatments: targeted treatment of the area of activity so the colony is dealt with, not just the visible termites
Baiting systems: the Trelona(R) Advanced Termite Baiting System, professionally installed for monitoring and colony management, which suits properties where heavy landscaping makes a full soil barrier difficult
Termite barriers: chemical soil treatment around the perimeter and service penetrations, planned around existing paving, pool surrounds and garden beds
Ongoing monitoring: regular checks of installed systems and of the property, with the frequency set by the property and its conditions, not by a standard timetable
Pre-construction: protection built in during a new build, an extension or a knock-down rebuild, which is worth raising early given how much rebuilding happens on Stretton's older large lots

OUTDOOR LIVING IN MOGGILL

Keeping the outdoor half of your Stretton property liveable

Stretton is close to 45 per cent parkland and green space by local estimates, and residents use it. Stretton Community Park on Cleveland Place has grassed areas, playgrounds, picnic shelters and paths, Stretton Wetland Reserve on Gowan Road has a playground, rotunda and shared pathway, and Presidential Park off Hoover Court is another neighbourhood green space. Karawatha Forest’s walking tracks run along the suburb’s south-eastern side.

That greenery is one of the reasons people move here, and it also means mosquitos, flies, spiders, ants and lawn grubs are part of life in the yard. We treat the areas you actually use: patios and alfresco ceilings, pool fences and pump areas, pergolas, sheds, retaining walls, garden edges and lawn. Where mosquito harbourage or turf damage is the real complaint, we say so and treat for that rather than selling you a general spray.

Rodent Control Stretton

Larger properties give rodents more to work with: sheds, garages, roof voids, compost, pet food, birdseed, fruit trees and established trees whose branches reach the roofline. Bushland and creek edges to the south of the suburb give them travel routes in, and cooler months push them indoors.

Signs worth acting on:

Droppings in the pantry, laundry, garage or shed
Scratching or running noises in the roof void or wall cavities at night
Gnaw marks on food packaging, timber, irrigation lines or electrical cabling
Greasy rub marks along skirtings, pipes, beams or shed frames.
Nesting material: shredded paper, insulation or dry grass in a quiet corner.
A dog or cat suddenly fixed on one spot of a wall or ceiling.

We work out how they are getting in, treat with placements chosen for a home with pets and children on site, and tell you the proofing that will stop it happening again.

STRETTON PEST CONTROL FAQS

Questions from Stretton homeowners

  • My House Was Built In The 1990s. Is It Too New To Have Termites?

No. Age is far less important than what has happened around the house since. On Stretton blocks we most often find risk created by later landscaping, timber retaining walls, decks and pool builds that covered or bridged the slab edge. A newer slab home still needs its perimeter kept clear and inspected.
