Pest pressure rises when the ground next door gets moved
Petrie sits in the City of Moreton Bay, bounded to the south by the North Pine River, to the north east by the North Coast railway line and to the south east by Yebri Creek, with Lawnton, Kallangur, Kurwongbah, Joyner and Whiteside on its other sides. Its centre is compact: Dayboro Road with Petrie Village and its Woolworths, the heritage listed Petrie State School with its 1878 and 1888 timber buildings still on site, and the rail junction where the Redcliffe Peninsula line branches off the North Coast line. Around that core sit older detached houses and a growing number of newer builds, with 86.5 per cent of occupied private dwellings recorded as separate houses at the 2021 Census.
This page covers our general pest and termite work in Petrie: ants, cockroaches, spiders, rodents and the rest of the household list, plus termite inspections, treatments, barriers and baiting. National Pest Solutions is a service area business working right across Brisbane, City of Moreton Bay, Redlands, Logan and the Sunshine Coast, so a Petrie job sits inside the same run as Lawnton, Kallangur and Strathpine.
What makes Petrie its own job is the amount of ground being turned over here. The Moreton Bay Central Priority Development Area, better known as The Mill at Moreton Bay, covers roughly 460 hectares across Petrie, Kallangur and Lawnton on and around the former Petrie paper mill site, and is being built out in stages with the UniSC Moreton Bay campus at 1 Moreton Parade as its anchor. Earthworks, demolition and staged construction disturb soil, nests and harbourage, and rodents, ants and cockroaches do not stay on the site boundary. They move into the nearest reliable food and shelter, which is the surrounding Petrie houses, sheds, unit blocks and share houses. That is a pest pattern you manage with timing and exterior work, not with a single spray indoors.

MYTH BUSTER
Does construction nearby cause pest problems?
Not automatically. Disturbed ground moves pests around, it does not by itself put them in your kitchen. What decides whether they stay is the condition of your own property:
- Rubbish, offcuts and stacked materials left against the house, which give rodents and cockroaches cover
- Timber, cardboard and garden waste in contact with soil, which is termite food in a protected spot
- Mulch, garden beds and soil pushed up over the edge of a slab or over a treated zone
- Leaking taps, air conditioning run off, blocked downpipes and damp subfloor corners
- Untrimmed shrubs and branches touching walls, gutters or a fence line, giving pests a bridge in
- Gaps under doors, in weep holes and around service penetrations, especially on older houses
Some of that is easy to fix in an afternoon. The rest is why we assess the individual property rather than assuming a whole street behaves the same way.
WHAT WE TREAT IN PATRIE
General pest control, termite management and commercial work
Most Petrie jobs fall into one of three buckets. Full detail on each sits on our site wide service pages, linked from every card below, because there is one page per service across the whole site rather than a copy for each suburb.

General pest control in Petrie
Standard residential work: internal and external treatment, roof void and subfloor where access allows, eaves, weep holes, fence lines and the shed. In Petrie we pay attention to the boundary side facing open ground and reserve edges, because that is usually where activity is coming from rather than from inside the house. Older houses near the town centre tend to have more entry gaps than the newer builds off Moreton Parade, so the same suburb often needs two different treatment plans.
Local fact: Petrie is bounded to the south by the North Pine River and to the south east by Yebri Creek, so a good share of properties sit within a short walk of a waterway or reserve edge.

Termite inspections and management in Petrie
Subterranean termites are active right across South East Queensland and Petrie is no exception, with timber homes of several eras, sheds, fences, retaining walls and river flat gardens all in the mix. We inspect the whole property, not just the rooms you are worried about, and report on what we find in writing.
Local fact: The 1878 Stanley building and 1888 Ferguson building at Petrie State School on Dayboro Road are still in use, a plain reminder of how long timber lasts here when it is looked after and inspected.

Commercial and food safe pest control in Petrie
Petrie has a real working precinct: Petrie Village at 13-19 Dayboro Road, anchored by Woolworths and supported by a pharmacy, Australia Post, a bakery and a veterinary practice, plus the UniSC Moreton Bay campus and the businesses growing around the redevelopment area. Food premises here are licensed by City of Moreton Bay under the Food Act 2006, and an auditor will ask for documented pest control, not a verbal assurance.
Local fact: Petrie railway station is the junction where the Redcliffe Peninsula line leaves the North Coast line, so the shops and food outlets near it carry constant foot traffic and constant food waste.
THE PRACTICAL SIDE
Built for a suburb under construction beside a river
Two documented things shape pest work in Petrie. The first is the redevelopment: a Priority Development Area of about 460 hectares spanning Petrie, Kallangur and Lawnton, declared in 2016 over the former paper mill land and still being staged out, which means ongoing earthworks, demolition, stockpiles and new slabs. The second is water: the North Pine River along the southern boundary and Yebri Creek to the south east, with the February 2022 event a clear reminder of what heavy rain does through this part of Moreton Bay. Disturbed soil pushes pests outward, and damp river flat ground keeps them comfortable once they arrive. Both change the sequence of the job.
Local fact: Sweeney Reserve on Old Dayboro Road sits directly on the North Pine River and, historically, its amenities were repeatedly lost to floods, which tells you plainly how the river behaves.
Honest caveat: We do not publish a fixed inspection interval or a set treatment cycle. What is right depends on the construction, the drainage, the surrounding ground and what we actually find, and it is assessed at the property.

Working around Petrie
Petrie is a compact suburb with a busy centre and a lot of activity around it, so a bit of planning saves everyone time on the day.
Local fact: Dayboro Road is the spine of the suburb, carrying the school, the shops and the route out towards the district’s western hinterland.
COMMON ASPLEY PESTS WE TREAT

Ants
Coastal brown and black house ants track along slab edges, driveway joints and paths, then find the kitchen. We treat the trails and the nesting areas outside, not just the ants you can see indoors.

Cockroaches
German cockroaches ride in with cartons and groceries and settle in warm kitchen voids, while larger species come in from drains, garden beds and bin areas after dark. Treatment targets harbourage, not open surfaces.

Rats & Mice
Rats and mice move in from drainage lines, dense vegetation and commercial bin areas, then use roof spaces and wall cavities. Older brick homes that have settled often have a gap at the eaves or roller door big enough to matter.

Spiders
Webbing spiders take over eaves, patios and pergolas on low set brick homes, and ground dwellers favour retaining walls, rockeries and mulched beds. We treat exteriors and clear webbing so it is obvious what has been done.

Silverfish
Treatment for silverfish activity in cupboards, storage spaces and other protected areas.

Fleas and other household pests
Treatment options for a wide variety of crawling, scurrying and flying pests.

TERMITE INSPECTIONS PETRIE
A newer house does not mean a termite proof house.
A termite inspection in Petrie is a whole property job. We inspect the interior, the roof void and the subfloor where access allows, then the exterior: slab edges, weep holes, garden beds, fences, retaining walls, stumps, sheds and any timber in contact with soil. Residential inspections currently incorporate traditional sounding, thermal imaging and moisture testing, and you receive a full written report on what we found and what we recommend.
Petrie makes that a mixed job. The heritage timber buildings at Petrie State School and the older houses near the town centre are a different inspection to a recent slab home near Moreton Parade, and the low lying ground toward the North Pine River and Yebri Creek adds moisture that termites like. We would rather look at the whole property once, properly, than chase a single wall.

PETRIE TERMITE TREATMENTS
Where we find activity or risk, treatment is matched to the building and the ground it sits on:
If you find live termites, do not spray them and do not disturb the area. Disturbing a working area scatters them and makes the colony harder to find. Treatment has to address the colony, not the termites you can see.

OUTDOOR LIVING IN PETRIE
Petrie has good open space for a suburb this size. Sweeney Reserve at 1 Old Dayboro Road runs along the North Pine River with picnic areas, a dog off leash area and a heritage trail that starts there. Mungarra Reserve at 2 Carmody Court has sporting fields, a skate park, a pond and a fenced dog park beside the same river. The Petrie to Kippa-Ring shared pathway starts here too, following the rail line out toward the peninsula.
All of that is good for weekends and slightly good for pests as well. Reserve edges, ponds and river flats support mosquitoes, spiders and ants, and they sit on the other side of a fence from a lot of Petrie backyards. Exterior treatment around eaves, pergolas, fence lines and outdoor furniture, plus honest advice on drainage and standing water, does more for a backyard than anything sprayed indoors.
Rodent Control PETRIE
Rodents are a year round issue in a suburb with a shopping centre, food outlets, older sheds and construction all inside a few streets. We inspect, identify the species, work out how they are getting in and treat with placements that are appropriate for a house with pets and children.

PETRIE PEST CONTROL FAQS
Questions from Petrie homeowners
There Is Building Work Near Us. Will That Push Pests Into My House?
It can. Earthworks and demolition move soil, nests and harbourage, and rodents, ants and cockroaches relocate to the nearest food and shelter. Whether they settle at your place depends on what your property offers them, so we treat the exterior and the entry points rather than just the rooms where you saw them.
