Pest Control Northgate

Termite and Pest Care for Northgate’s Character Homes, Post-War Houses and Townhouses

National Pest Solutions works across Northgate, from the pre-1947 timber homes on the ridge around Love Street down to the flatter, creek-side streets near Progress Park and the industry pockets beside the rail lines.

YOUR LOCAL NORTHGATE PEST CONTROL TEAM

Northgate has two kinds of houses, and they need two different termite plans

Northgate sits about 11 kilometres north-east of the Brisbane CBD in Brisbane City Council’s Northgate Ward, wrapped by Nundah to the south, Banyo to the north and east, and Virginia to the west. Brisbane City Council’s heritage record for the suburb describes the pattern plainly: pre-war and interwar houses on the elevated streets, post-war homes on the lower flat land, and large pockets of industry threaded through it. Add the townhouses and unit blocks built since, and one street can hold three completely different building types.

This page covers what we do here: general pest control for homes and units, termite inspections and termite management, and commercial work for the Toombul Road and Holland Street businesses. National Pest Solutions is a South East Queensland service business, so the same team also covers the neighbouring Brisbane North suburbs, City of Moreton Bay, Redlands, Logan and the Sunshine Coast.

Why it matters for pest and termite work is simple. An interwar timber home on the Northgate hill gives us a subfloor to get into and timbers we can sound and read. A post-war slab house on the flat gives us far less to look at, and the Queensland Government’s own advice on subterranean termite infestation notes that activity is more likely to stay undetected in slab-on-ground homes than in houses with suspended floors. Two properties, two inspection approaches, one suburb.

MYTH BUSTER

Do Northgate’s pre-1947 timber homes mean you will get termites?

Not automatically. Age and timber alone do not decide it. The Banyo-Northgate neighbourhood plan protects houses built before 1947 and the street character around them, which means a lot of Northgate homes are original timber rather than rebuilt, but plenty of them have never had a termite problem. What raises risk is the condition around the building:

  • Timber in contact with soil: stumps, steps, decks, garden edging and old fence posts against a wall
  • Damp that does not dry out, from a leaking tap, a blocked downpipe or a subfloor with poor airflow
  • Stored timber, firewood, cardboard and renovation offcuts kept under the house or against the fence
  • Garden beds, mulch and mounded soil built up over a slab edge or over an inspection zone
  • Alterations and additions that cover or interrupt an older termite management system
  • No recent inspection, so activity has time to work quietly through concealed timber

We assess the individual property, not the era on the title. Two houses on the same Northgate street can carry very different risk.

WHAT WE TREAT IN NORTHGATE

General pest control, termite management and commercial work

Northgate is residential and industrial in the same 3.3 square kilometres, so we run all three service types here. Full detail for each one lives on the site-level service page linked under each card.

General pest control in Northgate

Around 43 per cent of Northgate’s occupied homes are townhouses, semi-detached homes or units, going by the 2021 Census, so a lot of our work here is on shared walls, shared roof spaces and shared bin areas where a problem in one unit is a problem for the block. In the older detached homes we spend more time on subfloors, weatherboard gaps and roof voids.

Local fact: 2021 Census counted 1,950 occupied private dwellings in Northgate: 57.1 per cent separate houses, 20.2 per cent semi-detached or townhouses and 22.4 per cent flats or apartments.

Termite inspections and management in Northgate

The hill and the flat need different work. On the elevated pre-war and interwar streets we get under the house and read the timber directly. On the lower post-war slab homes we work the perimeter, the slab edge, wet areas and anything built up against the building since.

Local fact: Brisbane City Council’s heritage citation for Love Street records pre-war and interwar homes on the higher ground with post-war and multi-residential infill through the same street.

Commercial kitchen pest inspections

Commercial and food safe pest control in Northgate

Northgate carries genuine industry. The Banyo-Northgate neighbourhood plan set out to preserve well located industry land in the Northern major industry area, and the Toombul Road and Holland Street corner has kept building, with the BIZ185 industrial units completed alongside a service station and a coffee outlet on the same site. Warehouses, workshops, retail and food premises each need a documented program rather than a spray.

Local fact: Both Northgate station and Bindha station, on the Virginia boundary, sit next to industrial land.

COMMON ASPLEY PESTS WE TREAT

National Pest Solutions Ant Control Moreton Bay City

Ants

Ants come in along the same paths water does: slab edges, path joins, retaining walls and the garden beds sitting hard against a house. We treat the trail and the nesting area rather than the ants on the bench.

Cockroaches

German cockroaches ride in with cartons and appliances and stay in kitchens and laundries, while the larger species come up from drains, garden litter and subfloors. In attached homes we look at what is shared before we treat.

Rats & Mice

Rats and mice move between industry, rail corridor, creek lines and houses, which is a very Northgate combination. Roof and subfloor entry points matter more here than bait alone.

Spiders

Webbing spiders build up under eaves, in patio corners and around the fence lines backing onto parkland and rail corridor. We treat surfaces they actually use, then talk through the ones best left alone.

WHY NORTHGATE'S RIDGE, FLAT AND CREEK LINE MATTER HERE

Built for protected timber homes, slab-on-ground houses and a creek-fed low side

Northgate’s shape does a lot of the work in explaining its pest pressure. The suburb rises to a ridge, drops to flat lower streets, and drains into the Cannery Creek and Nundah Creek systems on the way to Moreton Bay. Council’s severe weather alert material for the Greater Northgate, Banyo and Nundah area uses a gauge on Cannery Creek at Crockford Street, Northgate, and lists Progress Park, Station Avenue and the Nudgee Road crossing among the locally impacted spots. Water that sits, then drains, then sits again is exactly what makes soil-borne termites and rodents comfortable.

What we do differently because of it:

Subfloor access first on the elevated pre-war and interwar homes, sounding and probing accessible timber rather than judging from the outside
Slab edge, wet area and perimeter focus on the post-war houses on the flat, where concealed activity is harder to see
Moisture testing and thermal imaging as part of our current residential termite inspection method, alongside traditional sounding and a full written report
Drainage and soil level checks near the low-lying streets: downpipe discharge, built-up garden beds and mulch over inspection zones

Local fact: Council’s flood impact reference for the Cannery Creek catchment names Progress Park, Station Avenue and the Nudgee Road crossing in Northgate at rising gauge levels.

Honest caveat: How often a Northgate property should be inspected, and which termite management method suits it, depends on the construction, the site and what we find on the day. We assess it at the property instead of applying a set interval.

TERMITE INSPECTIONS NORTHGATE

Character housing does not mean termite-proof housing, and a newer slab does not either.

A Northgate inspection is a walk through the whole property, not a look at one wall. We check accessible interior rooms, the roof void where we can get in, the subfloor on high set and suspended floor homes, the full external perimeter, fences, retaining walls, garden edging, stumps, sheds and any tree stumps left in the yard.

Our residential termite inspections currently incorporate traditional sounding of accessible timbers, thermal imaging, moisture testing and a full written report, so you get the findings in writing rather than a verbal summary at the gate. On protected pre-1947 homes we are careful about how we work: reading timber, not opening it up.

NORTHGATE TERMITE TREATMENTS

If we find activity, the plan is matched to the building and the situation, not sold off a shelf.

Active treatments where live termites are present, aimed at the colony rather than the termites you can see
Baiting systems, including the Trelona(R) Advanced Termite Baiting System, professionally installed and monitored
Chemical and physical barriers for treated zones around the building, subject to construction and site conditions
Ongoing monitoring so a treated property does not simply go quiet and get forgotten
Pre-construction termite management for new builds, extensions and rebuilds, which matters in a suburb with a growth node planned around Northgate station

If you find live termites, do not spray them and do not disturb the workings. Disturbed termites often abandon that spot and keep going elsewhere in the building, which makes the job harder. Cover it back over, leave it alone and call us on 1300 356 691. If you have already found them, /found-termites/ walks through the first steps, and /termite-treatment/ covers the methods in full.

OUTDOOR LIVING IN ASPLEY

Working around Northgate

Northgate is a compact suburb cut through by rail lines, so how we get to a property and what we can access shapes the visit.

Toombul Road and Nudgee Road carry the through traffic and the truck movements, so on those frontages we park considerately and work around access rather than blocking a driveway or a loading zone
The rail corridor and the level of industry mean some streets are narrow and tightly parked near the stations, and we will confirm access before a first visit
On the ridge homes we need the subfloor and the roof void clear enough to get in safely, so moving stored boxes and timber beforehand saves time
In townhouses and unit blocks, around 43 per cent of homes here, body corporate or property manager approval is often needed before we treat shared areas, and we are happy to deal with them directly
We plan timing around pets, children and school runs, including the Northgate State School catchment on the Nundah side of the suburb, and around trading hours for commercial sites

Local fact: Northgate covers about 3.3 square kilometres and had a population of 4,876 at the 2021 Census, with two railway stations inside the suburb, Northgate and Bindha.

OUTDOOR LIVING IN NORTHGATE

Progress Park on Paterson Parade is the local green space, a couple of hectares of open ground and playground tucked behind the houses, and the Northgate Reserve dog park on Nudgee Road gets a steady stream of local dogs. Parkland is good for a suburb and neutral for pests: what decides whether the mosquitos, ants, spiders and rodents come inside is the last few metres of your own yard.

Standing water in pot bases, tarps and blocked gutters breeds mosquitos. Mulch and garden beds built against the house give ants a covered run in. Webbing spiders like patio corners, pergolas and fence lines. We treat the outdoor areas people actually use, the patio, the deck, the entry, the shed, so the yard stays usable.

RODENT CONTROL NORTHGATE

Rodents are the pest that best explains Northgate. Industry, warehousing, two station precincts, a rail corridor and creek lines all sit inside or against the residential streets, which gives rats and mice food, shelter and easy runs between them. Older timber homes add gaps at the eaves, subfloor vents and roof entry points.

Signs worth acting on:

Scratching or running noises in the roof or wall cavity, usually at dusk or during the night
Droppings along skirting boards, in the pantry, in the shed or in the roof insulation
Gnaw marks on food packaging, timber, plastic pipe or electrical cabling
Greasy rub marks along the same route on beams, pipes or fence rails
A persistent musty smell in a cupboard, roof space or subfloor
Disturbed pet food, bird seed or compost overnight

We find the entry points and the harbourage first, then place treatment where it works and where children and pets cannot reach it.

COMMERCIAL PEST CONTROL NORTHGATE

Northgate’s industry is documented, not decorative. Council’s Banyo-Northgate neighbourhood plan set out to preserve well located industry land in the Northern major industry area while planning a growth node around Northgate station, and the Toombul Road and Holland Street corner now mixes warehousing, industrial units, a service station and food and beverage retail on the one site.

We work with:

Warehousing, transport and light industrial premises
Workshops, manufacturing and trade suppliers
Cafes, takeaway and food retail
Offices and mixed-use tenancies near the station
Schools, childcare and community facilities
Retail and body corporate managed sites

Programs are built around your site and your auditor: scheduled service visits, monitoring points, documented reporting and treatment records you can show, plus advice on proofing and housekeeping so the same issue does not come back. National Pest Solutions is CM3 certified, Queensland Health accredited and HACCP certified via Compass Assurance.

NORTHGATE PEST CONTROL FAQS

Questions from Northgate homeowners

  • My House Is A Pre-1947 Timber Home On The Northgate Ridge. Is A Termite Inspection Different?

Yes, in a good way. A suspended floor usually gives us subfloor access and timber we can sound and read directly, which is more than a slab home offers. On protected character homes we work non-invasively wherever possible, using sounding, thermal imaging and moisture testing rather than opening anything up.
