YOUR LOCAL MOUNT GRAVATT PEST CONTROL TEAM

A suburb wrapped around a bushland reserve

Mount Gravatt is defined by its hill. The 195 metre rise west of Logan Road sits in a reserve that was set aside in 1893, and today Mount Gravatt Outlook Reserve covers 91 hectares of bushland with walking trails, a lookout and picnic areas. It adjoins the Griffith University Nathan campus and connects westward to the much larger Toohey Forest Park.

The suburb itself is compact, with 3,733 residents at the 2021 census. The housing is more mixed than most of southern Brisbane: about 61 per cent separate houses, 139 townhouses and 444 flats or apartments, so pest work here spans older houses on sloping blocks, newer townhouse groups and small unit blocks along the Logan Road corridor.

The hill was known to the Yuggera and Turrbal peoples as kaggur-mabul, understood to mean “place of echidnas”. The English name was applied in 1840 by surveyor Robert Dixon, after Lieutenant George Gravatt, who commanded the Moreton Bay penal colony briefly in 1839.

Living against 91 hectares of retained bushland is genuinely lovely, and it changes what turns up in your roof, your garden and your garage.

MYTH BUSTER

Does backing onto bushland mean you just have to live with pests?

No, and you also should not respond by carpet bombing your yard. Both extremes are wrong, and on the bushland edge the second one causes real harm.

Bushland brings a constant supply of insects and animals to your boundary. What you can control is whether your house is an easy place for the ones that matter to get into and stay. That is a proofing and harbourage job, not a spraying volume job.

The other half is method. Reserves next door mean non-target wildlife: Toohey Forest is home to koalas, echidnas and gliders along with more than 75 bird species, reptiles and frogs. Rodenticides carry a documented risk to animals that eat poisoned rodents or the bait itself, which is why product labels carry directions to protect non-target species and why bait placement matters as much as bait choice ([Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority, anticoagulant rodenticides review](https://www.apvma.gov.au/chemicals-and-products/chemical-review/listing/anticoagulant-rodenticides)).

So on properties near the reserve we:

  • Use locked, tamper resistant stations rather than loose bait, always
  • Place stations along the building and internally where practical, rather than out in the vegetation
  • Prioritise exclusion, proofing and removing food and harbourage, so less bait is needed at all
  • Remove and account for bait at the end of a program rather than leaving stations to sit

Treating a bushland edge property well is about precision. Anyone offering to blanket spray your boundary to keep the bush out is selling you something that will not work and should not be attempted.

Rodent control in Mount Gravatt

Rodent work is the signature job here. Bushland provides permanent shelter, and homes provide food, warmth and roof space, so pressure is highest as the weather cools and again after any disturbance to the reserve edge.

The work is exclusion first: roof lines, eaves and gable vents, weep holes, subfloor access, pipe and cable penetrations, and overhanging branches that act as bridges. Baiting is done in locked, tamper resistant stations positioned to keep them away from native wildlife and pets, and we tell you where every station is.

Termite inspections and management in Seven Hills

Very little was built at Seven Hills before the war. The estate was sold to the War Service Homes Commission in 1920 and the suburb filled out mainly in the early post war years under State Housing Commission sponsored building, with construction continuing through the 1960s until 1972. That means a lot of homes predate any requirement for a termite management system, and the ones that have a system have usually had seventy years of decks, carports, sheds and retaining walls added around it.

Residential inspections currently incorporate traditional sounding, thermal imaging and moisture testing, with a full written report. On a sloping block the subfloor and the retaining walls are where we spend our time.

General pest control in Mount Gravatt

Ants and spiders dominate on bushland edge blocks, and both come in from the garden rather than from inside. Treatment concentrates on the perimeter, paths, retaining walls, garden beds and the roof void, plus the internal harbourage points that keep populations going once they are in.

Cockroach work here includes the native species that come in from the garden as well as the pest species that live indoors, and they need different handling. We will tell you which you have, because it changes whether treatment is even the right answer.

Termite inspections in Mount Gravatt

Retained bushland means retained trees, stumps and fallen timber near boundaries, which is a natural food source close to the house. Add the sloping blocks that come with a hillside suburb, and you get retaining walls, timber sleepers, terraced garden beds and stepped subfloors, all of which are common points of concealed access.

Residential inspections currently incorporate traditional sounding, thermal imaging and moisture testing, with a full written report covering findings, risk factors and the conditions on your property worth changing.

Townhouse, unit and commercial work in Mount Gravatt

With 444 flats and 139 townhouses in a small suburb, plus the Logan Road commercial strip, a fair share of the work here is shared buildings and business premises. Cockroaches and rodents in those move between tenancies through shared voids and bin areas, so a coordinated program beats individual treatments.

We are HACCP certified through Compass Assurance and CM3 certified, and we run scheduled programs with monitoring, service records and reporting for bodies corporate and commercial sites.

LIFE ON THE RESERVE EDGE

Built for bushland edge properties on a hillside

91 hectares of retained bushland. Mount Gravatt Outlook Reserve, connecting west to Toohey Forest Park, sits inside the suburb rather than beside it.
Constant boundary pressure. Rodents, ants and spiders arrive from vegetation, so the boundary and the building envelope are where the work happens.
Non-target wildlife nearby. Koalas, echidnas, gliders, more than 75 bird species, reptiles and frogs in the adjoining forest, which dictates locked stations and careful placement.
Perimeter first on ant and spider work, through walls, rockeries, paths and terraced beds rather than internal treatment alone.
Mixed housing. Roughly 61 per cent houses, with 444 flats and 139 townhouses, so both single homes and shared buildings need covering.

Local fact: The reserve on the hill was set aside in 1893, and the hill’s Indigenous name, kaggur-mabul, is understood to mean “place of echidnas”. The echidnas are still there, which is precisely why bait placement here is not a detail to be casual about.

Honest caveat: We cannot stop pests existing in a reserve, and we will not pretend to. What we can do is make your house a poor destination and keep the treatment tight enough that it does not affect the wildlife next door. If someone promises to eliminate pests from a bushland boundary, they are guessing.

THE PRACTICAL SIDE

Working around Mount Gravatt

Tell us if your property adjoins or is close to the reserve. It changes bait placement, station type and the proofing recommendations.
Trim branches that touch or overhang the roof where you can. Rodents use them as bridges and they are the cheapest fix available.
Clear a path around the perimeter and unlock the subfloor. On a sloping block the low side is usually where activity shows first.
Point out retaining walls, timber sleepers and terraced garden beds so they are included in the termite inspection.
Steep driveways and narrow hillside streets are common here, so mention access constraints when booking.
Products are applied by trained technicians per label and Queensland Health requirements. Tell us about children, pets, fish tanks, chooks and beehives when you book, and about any wildlife you regularly see in the yard.

Local fact: Mount Gravatt Outlook Reserve includes bushwalking trails, picnic areas, a cafe and a lookout that on a clear day takes in the Moreton Bay islands, the D’Aguilar Ranges and the Glass House Mountains.

Properties across the Toohey Forest fringe share the same conditions, so the same approach applies. If you own more than one property nearby, we can look at them on the one visit.

MOUNT GRAVATT PEST CONTROL FAQS

Questions from Mount Gravatt residents

  • We Back Onto The Reserve And Keep Getting Rats In The Roof. What Actually Works?

Exclusion plus controlled baiting, in that order. Rodents will keep arriving from the bushland no matter what, so the fix is making your roof and subfloor hard to enter: sealing roofline gaps, vents, weep holes and service penetrations, and cutting back branches that bridge to the roof. Baiting in locked, tamper resistant stations then handles the ones already inside.
