Pest Control Manly

Harbour, Home and Termite Protection for Manly Properties

National Pest Solutions looks after general pest control and termite work across Manly, from the older timber streets behind Ernest Street to the unit blocks and cafes that ring Manly Boat Harbour. It is a suburb where a lot of gear gets stored, and stored gear is where pests settle in first.

YOUR LOCAL MANLY PEST CONTROL TEAM

Bayside living, boat sheds and pests that move in with the storage

Manly is a compact bayside suburb in the City of Brisbane, sitting in Brisbane City Council’s Wynnum Manly Ward with Wynnum to the north, Lota to the south, Manly West inland and Moreton Bay along the whole eastern edge. It runs to only 2.7 square kilometres, so the housing sits close together: pre-war timber homes on the older streets, later brick, modern infill, and a genuine share of attached and unit stock. At the 2021 Census, 70.6 per cent of Manly dwellings were separate houses, 16.1 per cent were flats or apartments and another 6.5 per cent were townhouses or similar, a mix you do not get in most Brisbane bayside streets.

This page covers the work we do in Manly itself: general pest control for homes and units, termite inspections and termite management, and food safe and commercial programs for the businesses along Cambridge Parade and around the harbour. National Pest Solutions is a service area business working right across Brisbane, City of Moreton Bay, Redlands, Logan and the Sunshine Coast, and Manly sits in our Brisbane East run alongside Wynnum and Lota.

What makes Manly different is how much of the suburb is given over to storing things. Manly Boat Harbour is a Queensland state boat harbour, and the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron operates a marina of 597 berths on it along with a concrete hardstand and service area, slipping facilities and a run of storage lockers, volunteers’ sheds and trades sheds. Multiply that by every household trailer, tender, dinghy, boat cover, rope locker and garage full of fishing gear across the suburb, and you have thousands of dark, dry, undisturbed cavities. Ants, cockroaches, spiders and rodents do not need much more than that. Treat only the house and ignore the shed, the boat cover and the trailer stack, and the same pests walk back inside within weeks.

MYTH BUSTER

Does living on the water in Manly mean you will get pests?

Not automatically.

Plenty of Manly homes a street back from The Esplanade go years without a real problem, while a house further inland gets hit twice in a season. Proximity to Moreton Bay is not the deciding factor. What actually invites pests in is far more boring, and mostly fixable:

  • Stored boats, trailers, covers and tarpaulins left untouched for months, especially against a fence or wall
  • Timber decks, stairs and retaining walls in constant contact with soil in older bayside yards
  • Blocked or leaking gutters and downpipes, and air conditioning condensate discharging beside a slab edge
  • Subfloor vents blocked by stored goods, garden beds or lattice on high set timber homes
  • Bins, grease traps and cardboard stacked at the back of a busy food business
  • Dense plantings, palms and pandanus growing hard against walls and roof lines
  • Pet food, bird seed and fishing bait kept in the shed rather than sealed containers

We would rather assess the individual property than judge it by its postcode. Two houses on the same Manly street can carry completely different risk, and the only way to know which is which is to get underneath and up into it.

WHAT WE TREAT IN MANLY

General pest control, termite management and commercial programs

Most Manly jobs fall into one of three buckets. Below is what each one looks like here. The full method, inclusions and product detail live on our site-wide service pages, which every heading links up to.

Pest Control Manly Queensland

General pest control in Manly

Homes here are rarely just a house. There is usually a shed, a carport, a boat or trailer, and often a shared driveway or a common wall. Our residential treatments work the internal perimeter, then the outside envelope, roof void and subfloor, and then the storage that everyone else skips, so the treated zone matches how the property is actually used.

Local fact: Manly covers just 2.7 square kilometres, so garages, sheds and boat storage sit unusually close to living areas.

Termite inspections and management in Manly

Manly has pre-war timber homes, post-war brick, modern slab construction and waterfront unit blocks inside the same few streets, and each of those needs a different inspection approach. Timber decks, stairs, garden retaining and stored timber offcuts are the details we spend the most time on in this suburb.

Local fact: Brisbane City Council’s Traditional building character overlay applies to pre-1947 streetscapes address by address, so two Manly neighbours can own very different houses.

Commercial and food safe pest control in Manly

Manly Harbour Village on Cambridge Parade is a working hospitality and retail precinct, with cafes, restaurants, an IGA and the 7 Day Markets at the Stratton Terrace corner, a pharmacy, medical rooms and weekly markets, plus the yacht squadron clubhouse and motel on the harbour. Food premises, marine trade sheds and a school all need documentation, not just a treatment.

Local fact: Manly harbour village is a mapped precinct (NPP-004) in Brisbane City Plan’s Wynnum – Manly neighbourhood plan.

WHY HARBOUR-SIDE STORAGE AND LOW BAYSIDE GROUND MATTER HERE

Built for boat storage, older bayside timber and storm tide ground

Two documented conditions shape pest and termite work in Manly. The first is storage: a state boat harbour with hardstand, slipway and sheds at one end of the suburb, and boats, trailers and covers parked in yards and driveways at the other. Undisturbed, ventilated-but-dry cavities are exactly what ants nest in and rodents breed in. The second is ground level. Brisbane City Council maps storm tide flooding as its own layer on the Flood Awareness Map and says low-lying parts of Brisbane and the bayside suburbs may be affected, including by king tides. Ground that holds water changes subfloor moisture, and subfloor moisture is what draws subterranean termites toward a building.

What we do differently in Manly:

Inspect the whole storage footprint, boats, trailers, covers, lockers and sheds, not only the dwelling
Take moisture readings around subfloors, slab edges, wet areas and any timber sitting near or on soil
Check subfloor ventilation on high set timber homes, including vents blocked by stored gear or garden beds
Choose between barrier and baiting options based on the actual construction, ground conditions and access we find, rather than one default system

Local fact: Council’s storm tide flood layers for Brisbane are set at 2.1, 2.5 and 2.85 metres AHD depending on likelihood, which is why bayside subfloor and slab-edge checks matter.

Honest caveat: How often a Manly property should be inspected, and which termite system suits it, depends on its construction, ground conditions and history. We assess that on site and put it in writing, and we do not quote an interval sight unseen.

THE PRACTICAL SIDE

Working around Manly

Manly is narrow, busy near the water and tight on parking. A bit of planning keeps the job efficient and keeps us out of your way.

Cambridge Parade and the streets around the harbour fill up with cafe trade, markets and boat traffic, so we book precinct work for quieter windows where we can
Maritime Safety Queensland has announced parking, pathway and safety works around Trafalgar Street and Norfolk Point at the boat harbour, so access near the breakwater may change while that is under way
High set timber homes on the older streets need the subfloor accessible: please move stored gear away from the hatch and vents before we arrive
Around 22 per cent of Manly dwellings are units or attached homes, so body corporate or building manager approval may be needed before common property, roof spaces or external walls are treated
Pets and children simply need to be out of treated areas until surfaces are dry, and we will tell you exactly how long that is on the day

Local fact: Manly is served by a station on the Cleveland line, and Manly State School sits on Ernest Street, so we time work around school and commuter peaks in those streets.

COMMON MANLY PESTS WE TREAT

Pest Control Manly Queensland

Ants

Coastal brown and black house ants track along slab edges, driveway joints and paths, then find the kitchen. We treat the trails and the nesting areas outside, not just the ants you can see indoors.

Pest Control Manly Queensland

Cockroaches

German cockroaches ride in with cartons and groceries and settle in warm kitchen voids, while larger species come in from drains, garden beds and bin areas after dark. Treatment targets harbourage, not open surfaces.

Pest Control Manly Queensland

Rats & Mice

Rats and mice move in from drainage lines, dense vegetation and commercial bin areas, then use roof spaces and wall cavities. Older brick homes that have settled often have a gap at the eaves or roller door big enough to matter.

Pest Control Manly Queensland

Spiders

Webbing spiders take over eaves, patios and pergolas on low set brick homes, and ground dwellers favour retaining walls, rockeries and mulched beds. We treat exteriors and clear webbing so it is obvious what has been done.

Pest Control Manly Queensland

Silverfish

Treatment for silverfish activity in cupboards, storage spaces and other protected areas.

Fleas and other household pests

Treatment options for a wide variety of crawling, scurrying and flying pests.

Termite Inspections Manly

A bayside address does not make a home termite-proof.

Termites are not deterred by a sea breeze. They travel underground and enter where timber meets soil or where moisture collects, and Manly offers plenty of both: older timber homes and stairs, decks and pergolas built for the view, garden retaining, and slab homes with garden beds pushed up to the edge.

Our residential inspections currently incorporate traditional sounding, thermal imaging and moisture testing, and you receive a full written report with what we found, what we could not access and what we recommend. We inspect the interior, roof void, subfloor where accessible, the exterior perimeter, fences, trees and stored timber, and yes, the shed and the boat trailer.

Manly Termite Treatments

If you have found live termites: do not spray them and do not disturb the workings. Disturbed termites simply move elsewhere in the building, and the visible termites are never the problem. The colony is. Cover it back up, leave it alone and call us on 1300 356 691.

Active treatments. Targeted treatment of the colony, matched to where the activity is and how the building is built.
Baiting systems. National Pest Solutions currently uses the Trelona(R) Advanced Termite Baiting System, professionally installed for monitoring and baiting.
Barriers. Chemical and physical barrier options, selected on the construction type and the ground we find on site.
Ongoing monitoring. Scheduled checks so a treated property does not quietly become an untreated one.
Pre-construction. Termite management for new builds, extensions and renovations, which matters on the older Manly blocks being rebuilt or extended.

Manly also has genuinely old buildings in it, including places on Brisbane City Council’s heritage register along Royal Esplanade. Character and heritage properties need a gentler approach and more careful documentation.

OUTDOOR LIVING IN MANLY

Verandahs, foreshore parks and the pests that come with them

Manly life happens outside. The Wynnum, Manly and Lota Foreshores are a Brisbane City Council heritage place and part of the Bayside Parklands, a 16 kilometre ribbon of connected parks along the bay, taking in Manly Beach, Norfolk Point and the boat harbour, and there is a council dog off-leash area on the Manly foreshore. Bayside Park on The Esplanade is the local picnic and barbecue spot. Those foreshore parks overlook the tidal flats of Moreton Bay Marine Park.

All of that is lovely, and it also means mosquitos at dusk, flies around the barbecue, spiders webbing up the verandah and ants marching along the pavers. We treat outdoor living areas as part of the job, not an optional extra, and we can talk through what is realistic to expect near open water and parkland.

Rodent Control Manly

A working harbour, a hospitality strip and a suburb full of sheds and stored boats is a good living for rats and mice. Bins and grease traps behind Cambridge Parade, feed and bait in lockers, and a boat that has not moved since Easter all read as shelter and food.

Signs worth acting on:

Droppings along skirting, in drawers, in the shed or inside a boat cabin
Gnawed food packaging, wiring, hoses or boat upholstery
Scratching or running noises in the roof at night
Greasy rub marks along walls, beams or fence lines
A persistent musky smell in a cupboard, subfloor or cabin
Disturbed insulation or shredded paper, cloth or rope

We find the entry points and the harbourage, control the population and then talk through proofing so it does not simply repeat next winter.

Commercial pest control Manly

Manly Harbour Village is a real trading precinct, not a handful of shops. Cambridge Parade carries cafes, restaurants, an IGA and the 7 Day Markets, a pharmacy, medical rooms and a day spa, weekly craft markets and evening food events, and the harbour adds a yacht squadron clubhouse, a motel and marine trades sheds. Manly State School sits a few streets back.

Supermarkets, food retail and hospitality tenancies in the Kmart Plaza and Cannon Central centres
Offices and service businesses, including tenancies in Southgate Corporate Park
Warehousing, logistics and light industrial premises along the rail and Wynnum Road corridor
Schools and childcare, including the Cannon Hill State School and Cannon Hill Anglican College catchment
Body corporate managed unit and townhouse complexes, with common property, bin rooms and basements covered
Offices, medical suites and allied health rooms

Programs include a documented scope, scheduled service, pest activity monitoring, reporting suited to audits, and food safe options where food is handled. National Pest Solutions is HACCP certified via Compass Assurance, CM3 certified and Queensland Health accredited.

MANLY PEST CONTROL FAQS

Questions from Manly homeowners

  • My Boat And Trailer Live In The Driveway. Do They Need Treating Too?

They are usually the first thing we look at. A covered boat or a trailer that has not moved in months is a dry, dark, undisturbed space, which is ideal for ants, spiders and rodents. We inspect and treat that storage as part of a standard residential service, so the pests do not simply shuttle back to the house.
