Pest Control Arana Hills

Pest and Termite Solutions Between Bunyaville Forest and Kedron Brook

National Pest Solutions services Arana Hills with termite inspections, rodent control and general pest treatment, built for hillside homes that sit between a state forest and a creek corridor.

YOUR LOCAL GRIFFIN PEST CONTROL TEAM

A hillside suburb wedged between bushland and two waterways

Arana Hills sits about 13 kilometres north west of central Brisbane, in the City of Moreton Bay. Its southern boundary is Kedron Brook, its northern boundary is the Bunyaville forest, and Cabbage Tree Creek runs eastwards through the suburb and on through Ferny Hills. At the 2021 census it had about 6,971 residents in roughly 2,500 occupied private dwellings.

The area was forest and small farms along Cabbage Tree Creek before Frederick and Elizabeth Patrick bought the first land here in 1878. Subdivision began in 1937, but the suburb people recognise today started in 1956, when Willmore and Randell built the first residential estate, then known as Camden Park. It was renamed Arana Hills in 1962.

So the housing is largely 1960s and 1970s, on sloping ground, with mature trees, and with bushland or creek vegetation never far away. Every one of those facts changes how pests get into a house here.

A person in protective clothing sprays pesticide on a wooden railing with a metal canister in a sunlit outdoor area.
A person in a uniform inspects the ground near a wooden fence with a tool in a residential back garden area during daytime.

MYTH BUSTER

“The rats are coming in from the bush, so sealing the house won’t help”

They may well be coming from the bush. They are almost certainly getting in via a tree.

In a suburb with sixty year old gardens beside a forest reserve, the most common rodent entry route is not a hole at ground level. It is a branch, a vine, a palm or a hedge touching the roof, gutter or eaves. Rats climb well. Give them a bridge from a tree canopy onto the roof, and they arrive at the one part of a house nobody inspects, where a gap at a gable end, a lifted tile, a corroded vent or a gap where the roof meets an extension gets them inside.

Which means the sequence that works here is:

  1. Cut the bridges. Trim branches and vines back so nothing touches the roof, gutters or eaves. A clear gap of around a metre is a good target.
  2. Close the doors. Gable ends, vents, eave gaps, roof to wall junctions, service penetrations and where an extension meets the original roofline. These are the specific weak points on homes of this era.
  3. Then bait, if needed. In locked, tamper resistant stations with documented placements, positioned along the structure rather than out in the open where wildlife can reach them.

Bait alone in a bush fringe suburb is a subscription, not a solution. Every colony you remove is replaced from the reserve, so proofing is the only part that changes the outcome.

One more local point worth making plainly. If what is in your roof is a possum, that is not a pest control job. Possums are protected native animals in Queensland and there are rules about how they can be dealt with, including that a relocated possum must be released on the same property, which is why blocking entry points and providing a nest box is the approach that actually works ([Queensland Government, about possums](https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/plants-animals/animals/discovering-wildlife/possum/about-possums)). We will tell you honestly which animal you have before anyone charges you for a treatment.

WHAT WE TREAT IN ARANA HILLS

Rodents, termites, spiders, ants and general pests

Full detail for each service lives on our site wide service pages, linked under each card.

Rodent control in Arana Hills

The signature job here, and it is proofing led. We inspect the roofline, gable ends, eaves, vents, roof to wall junctions and service penetrations, then look at the trees, vines and hedges that give access to them, and at the subfloor on the lowset and split level homes.

Baits go into locked, tamper resistant stations placed along the structure with documented placements, chosen and positioned with the bushland setting in mind. We would rather remove the entry route than sell you a permanent baiting habit.

Termite Risk in Brisbane Why Homes Near Bushland & Creeks Are More Vulnerable

Termite inspections in Arana Hills

Homes from the late 1950s through the 1970s were built before termite management systems were required, and many here are split level or built on sloping ground, which means retaining walls, terracing, stepped subfloors and decks, all of them putting timber or moisture in contact with soil.

Proximity to forest and creek reserve also means plenty of long term nest sites nearby: mature trees, old stumps and buried timber. Inspections currently incorporate traditional sounding, thermal imaging and moisture testing, with a written report that names anything we could not access.

Redback Spider Control Moreton Bay

Spiders and ants in Arana Hills

Bush fringe suburbs get more spiders, and it is not your imagination. Vegetation, woodpiles, sheds, retaining walls, the underside of decks and mature gardens all provide harbourage, and hillside blocks provide plenty of retaining structure for ants to nest under.

We treat harbourage and nesting sites rather than misting the walls, and we will point out the woodpile, the stacked pots or the ivy that is doing most of the work.

Cockroaches and general pests in Arana Hills

In detached homes the common cockroaches harbour in subfloors, sheds, garages, roof voids and drains and come in from outside, which is a different job to the German cockroach work in unit blocks. Silverfish, moths and the occasional borer issue in older timber round out the routine work.

Why do mozzies bite some humans more than others

Mosquitoes and creek adjacent properties in Arana Hills

With Kedron Brook to the south and Cabbage Tree Creek running through, mosquito pressure rises after rain. Our part is on your property: removing standing water in gutters, saucers, buckets, tarps and unscreened tank inlets, and treating shaded resting harbourage. We do not pretend to stop mosquitoes coming off a creek corridor.

Commercial programs in Arana Hills

The Arana Hills shopping precinct, local schools, childcare and medical suites all need documented programs. We run scheduled servicing with zoned monitoring, service records, trend reporting and written corrective actions, and we are HACCP certified through Compass Assurance and CM3 certified.

WHAT DRIVES PEST PRESSURE HERE

Built for hillside homes on a bush and creek fringe

Bunyaville forest to the north. A permanent reservoir of rodents, spiders and wildlife immediately beyond the fence line.
Two waterways. Kedron Brook to the south and Cabbage Tree Creek through the suburb, adding mosquito pressure and vegetated corridors.
Mature tree canopy. Sixty year old gardens with branches, vines and palms bridging onto roofs, gutters and eaves.
1960s and 1970s housing. Built before termite management systems were required, and often extended or built in underneath since.
Sloping blocks. Retaining walls, terracing, stepped subfloors and decks, all creating concealed soil to timber contact.
Wildlife present. Possums and other protected natives share these roofs, and they are a different problem with different rules.

Local fact: The first residential estate here was built in 1956 by Willmore and Randell and was called Camden Park. The suburb was renamed Arana Hills in 1962, and the Patrick family had bought the first land in the area back in 1878.

Honest caveat: Living beside a forest reserve means ongoing pressure that no treatment eliminates. Anyone promising to make a bush fringe property permanently pest free is overselling. Proofing plus monitoring is what genuinely works, and it costs less over five years than repeat baiting.

THE PRACTICAL SIDE

Working around Arana Hills

Have a look at where trees, vines and palms touch the roof before we arrive. That is usually the answer, and trimming is often something you can arrange yourself.
Unlock roof and subfloor access, and clear a path around the perimeter. Split level homes often have awkward access, so tell us in advance.
Point out retaining walls, sleepers, decks, terracing and old stumps so they are included in the termite inspection.
Tell us if you have heard heavy movement at night rather than scurrying. That usually means a possum, and we will say so rather than treating.
Mention woodpiles, compost, chook pens and aviaries. They change where stations go.
Products are applied by trained technicians per label and Queensland Health requirements. Tell us about children, pets, fish tanks and beehives when you book, and we will position everything with wildlife in mind.

Local fact: Before subdivision, this area was forest and small farms along Cabbage Tree Creek, which is exactly why the mature trees, old stumps and creek vegetation still shape pest pressure here.

ARANA HILLS PEST CONTROL FAQS

Questions from Arana Hills residents

  • We Back Onto Bushland. Are We Always Going To Have Rats?

You will always have pressure, but you do not have to have rats inside. The reserve keeps supplying them, so the only durable answer is to remove the bridges from trees onto your roof and seal the entry points at gable ends, vents, eaves and roof junctions. Bait manages numbers, proofing changes the outcome.
