YOUR LOCAL ALDERLEY PEST CONTROL TEAM
Pest and termite work built around Alderley’s rail corridor and rebuilt industrial pockets
Alderley sits about 6 to 7 km north west of the Brisbane CBD in the Brisbane City Council area, with Newmarket to the south, Ashgrove and Enoggera to the west, Grange and Stafford to the east and Kedron and Everton Park to the north. Kedron Brook runs along the northern side of the suburb, the Ferny Grove railway line cuts through the middle, and the shops sit where Samford Road meets South Pine Road. Housing is mixed: older stumped timber homes and post-war brick on the streets around the station, and a large share of townhouses and apartments, including the Brickworks Park redevelopment around the heritage listed Newmarket Brickworks Chimney at 117 Mina Parade.
This page covers the general pest and termite work we do inside Alderley. National Pest Solutions is a service area business, so we also cover the neighbouring inner north west suburbs and the wider Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Redlands, Logan and Sunshine Coast regions from the same team.
Alderley matters for one reason more than most: it has been continuously built, rebuilt and industrialised for well over a century, and the leftovers of that show up in pest work. A railway corridor running the length of the suburb gives rodents and ants a sheltered, unbroken run past hundreds of back fences. Old commercial and industrial sites, including the brickworks that operated from 1912 until the late 1980s, have been cleared and rebuilt as housing, which disturbs long-established nests and pushes them into the nearest buildings. And a lot of the suburb’s original timber is still doing its job, in stumps, bearers, sheds and retaining walls, decades after it was cut. Those three things change where we look and in what order.

Does living beside the Alderley railway line mean you will get rodents?
Not automatically. A rail corridor is a movement route, not a guaranteed infestation. Whether rats and mice actually move from the corridor into your home depends on what your property offers them when they get to the fence line:
- Gaps under doors, worn weather seals, unsealed weep holes or vents, and unscreened subfloor openings
- Dense ivy, jasmine or bougainvillea running from the fence up onto a wall or roof
- Fruit trees, chicken feed, pet food or bird seed left out overnight
- Overflowing or unsealed bins in a shared townhouse bin store
- Roof cavities in older homes where tiles or ridge capping have shifted
- Stored timber, pavers and building offcuts stacked against the house, common on properties that have renovated
WHAT WE TREAT IN ALDERLEY
General pest control, termite management and commercial work
Alderley needs all three. There are family homes on old stumps, unit and townhouse complexes with shared walls and shared bin areas, and a genuine commercial strip at the Samford Road and South Pine Road junction. The full detail of each service lives on the site-level service pages linked below.

General pest control in Alderley
Ants, cockroaches, spiders, silverfish and the occasional flea job are the bread and butter here. In the older stumped homes the pressure usually comes from under the floor and up through service penetrations, while in the newer slab townhouses off Mina Parade it tends to come in at the ground floor perimeter, the garage and the shared bin store. We treat the perimeter, the internal harbourage points and the roof void as a set, not as separate visits.
Local fact: In the 2021 Census, only around 58% of dwellings in the Alderley area were separate houses, with about 14% semi-detached or townhouses and 27% flats or apartments (ABS, Alderley SA2).

Termite inspections and management in Alderley
Alderley has plenty of timber that has been in service for a very long time, plus slab construction of every vintage from the 1960s to last year. That means one inspection method does not fit the street. On a stumped timber home we spend the time under the house on stumps, bearers, ant caps and any enclosed area added later. On a slab home or unit we work the perimeter, weep holes, wet areas, garden beds built up against the wall and any slab edge that has been rendered or paved over.
Local fact: The Alderley streets around the station include locally heritage listed structures dating from the 1880s and the Federation period, including the corner shops at 15 Samford Road, built around 1885, and Alderley Railway Station, opened in February 1899.

Commercial and food safe pest control in Alderley
The Samford Road and South Pine Road corner has been a commercial precinct since the 1880s and still carries shops, food premises and service businesses, with more commercial floor space proposed under Brisbane City Council’s Alderley Centre planning work. Food premises, cafes and shops in an old strip have their own problems: shared walls, shared waste, service voids between tenancies and a lot of legacy plumbing. We work to documented, food safe programs with reporting the health inspector can read.
Local fact: Brisbane City Council is preparing a precinct plan for the Alderley centre focused on the Samford Road and South Pine / Enoggera Road corridors, aiming for more mixed use development around Alderley railway station.
WHY LONG-LIVED TIMBER AND DISTURBED GROUND MATTER HERE
Built for old timber, rebuilt sites and a rail corridor
Three documented features of Alderley shape the work. First, age: the suburb grew around a station that opened in 1899, and its original building fabric, both timber homes and brick, is still standing and still being extended. Timber’s resistance to termites depends on species, heartwood and any preservative treatment, and older stumps, bearers and sheds are often untreated hardwood well past its best years. Timber Queensland’s construction timber guidance sets out how durability and termite resistance vary by species and treatment level, which is why we identify what we are looking at rather than assuming (Timber Queensland, construction timber). Second, disturbance: the Newmarket Brickworks operated on Mina Parade from 1912 until the late 1980s and that land is now housing, and there are further redevelopment proposals near the station. Excavation, demolition and new landscaping break up established nests and push ants, cockroaches and rodents outward. Third, water and edges: Kedron Brook runs along the northern boundary and Enoggera Creek is close by to the south, and Brisbane City Council’s flood mapping records both creek and overland flow paths through this part of the northside after the February 2022 event. Damp soil and moisture-damaged timber are where termite activity starts.
What we do differently in Alderley:
Local fact: The heritage listed Newmarket Brickworks Chimney at 117 Mina Parade, Alderley, was built around 1912 and is the only surviving structure of the brickworks that once operated there.
Honest caveat: How often a property needs inspecting or treating depends on its construction, its history and its conditions. We assess that on site and tell you what we find, and we do not apply a fixed interval to every home.

THE PRACTICAL SIDE
Working around Alderley
Alderley is compact, split by a railway line and a mix of narrow older streets and newer complexes with basement parking. That shapes the practical side of a job more than most suburbs.
Local fact: More than 4 in 10 dwellings in the Alderley area are attached dwellings or apartments (ABS 2021 Census, Alderley SA2), so shared walls and shared bin areas are a normal part of the job here.
Common Alderley pests we treat

Ants
Coastal brown and black house ants turn up in kitchens, bathrooms and along paving through the warmer months. Recently landscaped and rebuilt yards in the Mina Parade area are common call-outs, because disturbed soil moves nests.

Cockroaches
German cockroaches ride in with groceries, cartons and second-hand goods and settle in kitchens. Larger Australian and American cockroaches come up from drains, subfloors and garden litter, which is a regular pattern in the older stumped homes near the station.

Spiders
Webbing spiders build up under eaves, in fence lines and around the outdoor areas backing onto the rail corridor. Ground dwellers, including funnel webs and mouse spiders, prefer the damper garden beds and mulch near Kedron Brook.

Rodents
Rats and mice use the rail corridor, established trees and shared bin stores as cover, then look for a gap. Roof cavities in older homes and garages in newer complexes are the two spots we find them most.

Silverfish, fleas and other household pests
Silverfish, fleas, moths, borers and lawn grubs are all part of normal residential work here, and borers in particular matter in a suburb with this much older timber. Mosquito treatments are available for properties on the lower ground near the brook.
Termite inspections Alderley
An inner city suburb is not a low risk suburb.
Subterranean termites are active right across South East Queensland, and being 7 km from the CBD changes nothing about that. Alderley’s mix makes inspections a genuinely different job street by street: a stumped timber home from the suburb’s early decades, a post-war brick and tile, and a two-year-old slab townhouse each hide activity in different places.
Our residential inspections currently incorporate traditional sounding, thermal imaging and moisture testing, with a full written report at the end. The report tells you what we found, what we could not access and what we recommend, in plain English.

Alderley termite treatments
If we find activity, the plan depends on the construction, the species and where the colony is working from.
Important: If you find live termites, do not spray them and do not disturb the workings. Disturbing a lead can push the colony elsewhere in the building. Cover it back up if you can, then call us on 1300 356 691.
OUTDOOR LIVING IN ALDERLEY
Keeping the outdoor areas usable
Sedgley Park on Enoggera Road is the main open space in Alderley, with a fenced dog park and sporting facilities, and the Kedron Brook corridor along the northern edge of the suburb draws walkers and riders. Parkland and creek corridors are good for people and good for mosquitoes, biting midges, webbing spiders and paper wasps too, particularly for properties that back onto green space or the rail reserve.
We treat the areas people actually use: patios and decks, pergolas, fence lines, garden beds, sheds and around pool fencing, timed so the family can get back outside quickly.

Rodent control Alderley
Rodents in Alderley are usually a corridor and cover problem rather than a hygiene problem. The rail reserve, mature street trees, shared bin stores in unit complexes and building sites during a rebuild all give them shelter, and from there they only need a gap.
Signs worth acting on:
We work out how they are getting in, treat safely away from children and pets, and tell you what needs proofing. For businesses along the Samford Road strip we can set up documented monitoring rather than one-off baiting.
Commercial pest control Alderley
The Samford Road and South Pine Road junction has carried shops since the 1880s, and Brisbane City Council’s Alderley centre planning work is aimed at more commercial floor space and mixed use development around the station. We look after:
Programs include a documented service schedule, pest activity reporting suitable for audits, monitoring in food handling areas, rodent monitoring points and recommendations for proofing and housekeeping.

ALDERLEY PEST CONTROL FAQS
Questions from Alderley residents and businesses
My Alderley Home Is On Timber Stumps. Does That Make Termites More Likely?
It makes inspection more important, and it also makes inspection easier, because we can get under the house and look. Older untreated hardwood stumps and bearers are worth checking properly, since natural termite resistance varies with the timber species and any treatment it was given. We sound, scan and moisture test rather than guess.
