Rodenticide Regulatory Changes Support Wildlife Protection and Industry Standards

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has announced changes to the use of Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs), effective 24 March 2026.

As Australia’s federal regulator, the APVMA has undertaken a comprehensive review of rodenticide products, introducing measures designed to reduce the risk of secondary poisoning to native wildlife while maintaining access to effective rodent control solutions for licensed professionals.

National Pest Solutions Director, Stewart Paterson, supports the regulatory direction and its focus on responsible pest management practices.

“These changes represent a positive step forward for both environmental protection and the long-term integrity of our industry,” Mr Paterson said.

Mr Paterson confirmed that existing operational procedures already align with the updated requirements, including:

• Targeted and controlled bait placement

• Detailed site assessments

• Scheduled inspections and monitoring

• Carcass recovery where required

• Comprehensive documentation and reporting

“For our clients, there will be no disruption to critical rodent management services. Our systems and service programs have always been structured around best-practice standards,” he said.

Where required, National Pest Solutions will work closely with clients to adapt service programs, including:

• Adjusting service frequencies

• Implementing alternative rodenticide options (first and third generation products)

• Expanding non-chemical and exclusion-based control strategies

“These regulatory changes reinforce the importance of engaging qualified, licensed professionals and discourage inappropriate or unmanaged use of rodenticides,” Mr Paterson added.
