What pests do you treat in South East Queensland?

For general household pest management, we can recommend an appropriate treatment and prevention schedule after assessing your property. Commercial properties may require more frequent scheduled monitoring depending on the site, industry, pest pressure and compliance requirements.
Why do pests keep coming back after I've treated them myself?

Because seeing a pest and finding the source of a pest problem are two very different things.
Aerosol sprays and supermarket treatments may kill individual insects without addressing nests, colonies, breeding sites, entry points or environmental conditions attracting them.
For example, rodents may be entering through gaps around a building, mosquitoes may be breeding in standing water, ants may have established colonies away from where you’re seeing their trails, and German cockroaches can reproduce rapidly in hidden areas.
Professional pest management is therefore as much about understanding why the pest is there as killing the pest itself.
Is professional pest control safe for children and pets?

Professional pest management should always take the occupants and use of the property into account.

How common are termites in South East Queensland?

Very common.
Termites occur throughout Brisbane, Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast and surrounding South East Queensland areas.
Properties near bushland, waterways, parks and heavily vegetated areas can experience increased termite pressure, but being in a suburban or built-up location doesn’t make a property termite-proof. Termites can occur in virtually every South East Queensland suburb.
That’s why regular professional termite inspections are important even when there are no obvious signs of activity.
What should I do if I find termites in my house?

Don’t spray them, break open their workings or disturb the area unnecessarily.
It can be very tempting to grab a can of insect spray when you find termites, but killing the termites you can see doesn’t eliminate the colony responsible for the infestation.
Leave the area as undisturbed as possible and contact a termite professional.

How often should homes in South East Queensland have a termite inspection?

For most properties, at least annually is a sensible baseline, although some properties may warrant more frequent inspections depending on their termite risk and any termite management system in place.
Factors that can increase risk include previous termite activity, moisture problems, inaccessible building areas, gardens or soil against external walls, stored timber, ageing termite protection and proximity to bushland or established trees.
An inspection isn’t simply about finding active termites. It’s also an opportunity to identify conditions that may be making your property more attractive or accessible to them.
Do I need termite protection if my house is new?

Why do I suddenly have so many ants around my home?

Changes in ant activity can be driven by temperature, rainfall, moisture and available food.
South East Queensland conditions can create ideal environments for a range of ant species, and the ants you see travelling through your kitchen or across your patio may represent only a small proportion of a much larger colony.
Correct identification matters because different ant species behave differently and may require different control strategies.
NPS treats common household ants as well as troublesome species including green ants and funnel ants, which can cause significant problems in lawns.
What are all the little dirt mounds appearing across my lawn?

If you’re seeing numerous small mounds or funnels of loose soil throughout your lawn, funnel ants are one possible culprit.
Funnel ants build underground nests and bring soil to the surface, creating characteristic funnel-shaped mounds. Large infestations can make lawns uneven, unsightly and difficult to maintain.
Because colonies can extend across substantial areas, successful funnel ant management generally requires treating the infestation rather than individual funnels.

Why do cockroaches keep appearing even though my house is clean?

Cockroaches aren’t necessarily an indication of a dirty home.
They need food, moisture and shelter, and even well-maintained properties can provide all three. They may enter through plumbing penetrations, drains, gaps, adjoining properties, packaging or other pathways.
Species identification is particularly important. German cockroaches, for example, can establish large indoor populations and generally require a more intensive, multi-treatment strategy to interrupt their breeding lifecycle. NPS specifically excludes German cockroaches from its standard single general-pest treatment for this reason.
Can you get rid of spiders around my house?

We treat the common spider species found around South East Queensland homes and businesses.
Treatment can target areas where spiders shelter and build webs, including building exteriors, eaves and other appropriate locations.
However, spider management can also involve controlling the insects they’re feeding on and addressing conducive conditions. A property attracting large numbers of insects can effectively provide spiders with an ongoing food supply.

RATS, MICE & OTHER HOUSEHOLD PESTS FAQ

What are the signs that I have rats or mice in my roof?

Scratching or scurrying noises at night are one of the most obvious signs, but they’re not the only clue.
You might also notice droppings, gnaw marks, damaged food packaging, unusual smells, nesting material or activity around sheds, bins and outdoor areas.
Rodents shouldn’t be ignored. They can contaminate food and surfaces, damage insulation and building materials and potentially chew electrical wiring.
Professional rodent management looks beyond simply putting bait into a roof. Identifying likely entry points, food sources and activity areas can be an important part of achieving longer-term control.
Why do rats keep coming back to my property?

If rodents have access to food, water, shelter and a way into the building, removing individual rats doesn’t necessarily remove the conditions attracting them.
South East Queensland properties can offer plenty of opportunities through roof voids, sheds, vegetation, pet food, chicken feed, fruit trees, compost, bins and neighbouring properties.
An effective rodent strategy can therefore combine control, monitoring and practical recommendations for reducing the conditions supporting rodent activity.

How do I get rid of fleas if they're throughout my house?

Successful flea treatment needs to address their breeding lifecycle, not just the adult fleas biting people or pets.
Eggs, larvae and pupae may be present in carpets, cracks, bedding and protected areas, which is why flea problems can appear to persist even after adult fleas have been killed.
NPS treatments are designed to help break this breeding cycle. Where pets are involved, their flea management should also be addressed through appropriate veterinary advice so the home and animals aren’t continually reinfesting one another.
Can pest control help with mosquitoes around my yard?

Yes, although effective mosquito management is about more than killing mosquitoes that happen to be flying around at the time.
Treatment can target mosquito resting areas and breeding hotspots while reducing conditions supporting populations around the property.
In South East Queensland, checking for standing water is particularly important. Pots, containers, blocked gutters, drains and other places that retain water can become breeding sites.

What's eating or killing patches of my lawn?

Not every brown lawn is caused by drought, disease or poor watering.
Armyworm and lawn grubs can cause significant turf damage, sometimes resulting in rapidly expanding brown or damaged patches.
If sections of lawn appear to deteriorate unusually quickly, professional identification can establish whether an insect pest is responsible before an appropriate turf treatment is recommended. NPS provides targeted armyworm and lawn-grub treatments designed to eliminate larvae and protect turf.
What are the tiny insects damaging food, clothes, books or stored items?

Several different pests can attack stored products and belongings.
Silverfish commonly inhabit cupboards, storage spaces and hidden areas and can damage paper, books and other materials. Moth species may attack stored foods, clothing or carpets, while other stored-product insects can infest pantry goods.
Correct identification is particularly useful here because the source of the infestation isn’t always where you’re first noticing the insects.
