Flies

Flies – of the house, fruit, drain and midge varieties
Are pesky flies buzzing around your space and driving you crazy?
Do they land on your food, walls, and even your face? Are you tired of constantly swatting them away and wondering where they come from?
Not only are flies annoying, but they also carry diseases and can contaminate your food. They breed quickly and can easily turn into a major infestation if left unattended. And let’s face it, no one wants to deal with fly swatters, sticky traps, and DIY remedies that never seem to work.
Common Fly Species
True Fruit Flies (Tephritidae): Major agricultural pests, laying eggs inside healthy fruit, which then rots from the inside out (larvae, or maggots, feed within). Examples include the Queensland Fruit Fly (Bactrocera tryoni) and Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Ceratitis capitata).
Vinegar Flies (Drosophilidae): These are the smaller, brownish flies often seen around fruit bowls, compost, and drains (like Drosophila melanogaster). They are attracted to decaying organic matter and fermenting liquids but aren’t significant agricultural pests. They’re also common in pubs.
House Fly (Musca domestica): A cosmopolitan pest, arrived with settlers, attracted to human food and waste.
Drain Flies (Psychodidae): Fuzzy, moth-like flies found near drains and sewage.
Biting Midges (Ceratopogonidae): Tiny “sandflies” or “no-see-ums,” causing intense itching.
Bush Fly (Musca vetustissima): Native, known for landing in eyes, triggering the “Aussie Salute”.
Blowflies (Calliphoridae): Large, often metallic blue/green, important for breaking down organic matter but also linked to flystrike in sheep.
Stable Fly (Stomoxys calcitrans): Bites humans and animals, associated with livestock.
